When life feels overwhelming, peace can seem impossibly distant. Scripture offers a direct invitation to cast all anxiety on God.
Think of it not as a suggestion but as a command for freedom. Understanding how to release unhealthy emotional attachments is essential for anyone who longs to find peace and reconnect with the God who has never stopped loving them.
Ashley D. Wille, in her book My Journey Through the Cross, describes her painful journey through emotional isolation as living in a “red-hot furnace of affliction.”
The path out of that furnace begins with a single choice to let go of the weight.
Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.
Before anyone can cast all anxiety, they must identify what that anxiety is. Ashley D. Wille writes about feeling trapped in a cavernous disconnect that tormented her soul for years. Common unhealthy attachments that everyone has experienced include past regrets, people-pleasing, control, and fear of the future.
These attachments can feel like survival, but they actually function more like parasites, draining energy and quieting God’s voice. When you indulge in these, you are isolating yourself from Heaven.
The Bible warns that worrying tends only to evil because it shifts focus away from God (Psalm 37:8), pulling you away from His light. Holding onto these weights denies the very care God promises to provide.
Ashley describes the painful realization that she had been “divorcing” her husband emotionally in order to function. That coping mechanism only deepened her isolation.
Therefore, the first step toward relief is identification: Name the attachment, and acknowledge its weight.
Then admit that you cannot carry it alone.

Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past
—Isaiah 43:18
True relief for anxiety is not erasure; it is a rupture of the emotional power of the past. This, Ashley discovered when she had been rejecting God’s grace out of fear and pride, always trying to perform for a standard she could never meet.
She warns that clinging to “soul waste” blocks the path to victory.
Isaiah 43:18-19 invites believers to forget the former things and stop dwelling on the past: a divine call to release guilt, shame, and old identities that no longer define anyone in Christ.
Ashley describes leaving the “long, heavy shadows” of her former home behind when she finally decided to rest in God. What waited for her on the other side was something entirely new.
Forgetting is a daily decision to stop rehearsing old wounds through mindfulness and prayer and to create space to focus on the God who makes all things new.
This isn’t denial. This is simply choosing to believe what God says about you instead of what your memories whisper to you.
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness
—1 John 1:9
Releasing emotional burdens requires actively undoing the shackles that are keeping you down. Ashley details several key actions for releasing fear and finding healing. At one point in the book, among others, she shares a powerful moment when she felt compelled to “have it out with God” about her deep anger.
That honest confrontation became the doorway to receiving His grace.
Confession and repentance require deep honesty and the willingness to name hurts and sins instead of offering vague apologies.
You could consider writing a “release letter” to God that puts your surrender into words. If it feels safe, sharing that letter with someone you have conflict with can bring powerful closure. When you feel completely spent, practice the “I Can’t” principle. Admit, “I can’t, but You can.”
Ashley calls these moments grand opportunities to “surrender my soul to One Most High.”
These steps are not about earning favor but about admitting you need help and accepting it.
The more you practice these steps, the lighter your soul becomes.
There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God
—Hebrews 4:9
Finding peace is not a one-time event but a daily rhythm. You don’t find peace and have it forever; you need to hold onto it.
Ashley warns that anxiety will return, and when it does, you must learn to “cast[them out] again” without shame.
This is where a weekly Sabbath rhythm becomes essential. Setting aside time to reset emotional attachments and trust God’s management over your plans protects your soul from constant wear.
Ashley writes that God showed her He controls every detail of her life. It was that realization that led her to conclude that “worry never has to be a part of [her] life.”
Grounding yourself in the present moment requires trusting that God is already in your tomorrow. When anxiety rises, instead of spiraling, remember the truth that Christ has already won the victory.
His work is finished, and your job is simply to believe it and rest.
Ashley writes about learning to “forbid the old covenant veil of unbelief” from hiding the revelation of Christ within her. That veil comes down when you choose rest over striving.
Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story
—Psalm 107:2
The ultimate goal of releasing anxiety is reconnecting with God. This only happens when you choose to dwell in faith instead of fear.
Testimony is a powerful tool because naming what God has already done builds faith for the future.
“I can say that I have emerged from it a different person altogether“—Ashley D. Wille.
Her story proves that change is possible. The same God who was faithful before will be faithful again. Now, Ashley can say with confidence that God’s presence has become her favorite place, where “the possibility of heaven on earth does exist after all.”

So for today: Choose one attachment to surrender today, naming it plainly. Write it down, and pray over it. Then take one act of faith in its place (this could be serving someone else, sitting in silence to worship, or simply trusting God with that one thing you have been clutching).
As Ashley concludes, “The quest is vicious, but the reward is all surpassing (sic) Truth and everlasting Life, here and now.”
The path to freedom is open, and the only question is whether you’ll take the first step.
