Why We Need Daily Prayers of Forgiveness
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
—Romans 3:23
Every person makes mistakes. We might say things we should not say or think thoughts that do not please God. Sometimes we hurt others without meaning to.
These wrongs build up in our hearts like dust on a shelf. Over time, they can make us feel far from God.
Ashley D. Wille shares in My Journey Through the Cross about her own struggles with feeling dirty inside, writing about a key truth from the Bible that changed her view. In John 13:10, Jesus says that once we are saved, we only need to wash our feet each day, for our whole body is already clean because of what Christ did for us. It is only our feet that get dirty from walking in this world.
This is where prayers of forgiveness come in.
We do not need to be saved over and over. Jesus already did that work once, and that was for all time. What we do need, though, is to let Him clean the dust of daily life off our souls.
Daily prayers keep our hearts soft toward God and toward other people.
What the Bible Says About Cleansing
The Word of God has many verses about being made clean: the writer of Psalm 51 cried out to God after doing wrong, imploring the Lord to wash him and make him white as snow.
This old song shows us that people have always needed God’s mercy.
2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, And cleanse me from my sin.7…Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
—Psalm 51:2, 7
In the New Testament, we learn that Jesus paid for all our wrongs on the cross. Despite this, we still need to agree with God about our sins. When we pray, we are not telling God something He does not already know but simply opening our hearts to let His truth in.
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
—1 John 1:9
This is a promise we can hold onto. Prayers of forgiveness are not about making God love us more. He already loves us fully. These prayers are about us receiving that love with honest hearts.
Simple Prayers of Forgiveness to Say Daily
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;
—Philippians 4:6
You do not need fancy words to talk to God because He knows your heart better than you do. A simple prayer from a real place means more than long speeches with pretty words.
Try starting your day with words like these:
“Lord, I want to walk close to You today. Show me when I start to go my own way. Help me love people the way You love me.”
At night, you might pray:
“Father, I am sorry for the times today when I failed to show Your love. Forgive me for the sharp words I spoke. Forgive me for the selfish thoughts I let stay in my mind. Thank You that Jesus already paid for these wrongs. Wash me clean and give me peace as I sleep.”
These simple prayers of forgiveness to say daily keep your heart right with God. They do not need to be long because they just need to be real.
Repentance Prayer Guide for Each Day
Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,
—Acts 3:19
Repentance means turning around, where once you were walking one way and now you choose to walk toward God instead. This is not about feeling bad about yourself but about agreeing with God that His way is better.
A good repentance prayer guide has four simple steps:
- First, pause and ask the Holy Spirit to show you where you missed the mark today. He will bring things to your mind gently.
- Second, agree with God about those things. Say something like, “Yes, Lord, I did hold onto anger. I did not trust You with that situation.”
- Third, thank Jesus that His blood already covers that wrong. Ashley Wille learned this truth in a deep way: “I do not confess my sins to God because that would assume that my sin is an issue with Him.” She means that sin is no longer the thing that is troubling our relationship with God. Jesus already fixed that after all. We should confess because we agree with Him, not because we believe He is holding a grudge.
- Fourth, receive His forgiveness and peace. Tell Him, “I receive Your mercy now. Thank You for making me clean.”

Making Prayers of Forgiveness a Habit
let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
—Hebrews 10:22
Starting any new habit takes time, but daily prayers are one habit worth building, for the peace that comes from staying current with God is better than anything else.
Therefore, try linking your prayers to something you already do each day. Perhaps you could pray while brushing your teeth in the morning or while washing dishes at night. Praying while driving to work is also a possibility; the choices are endless.
Simply find times that work for you and stick with them.
Remember that God is not keeping score: He is not waiting for you to miss a day so He can be mad. He is your Father who loves being with you. When you mess up, do not give up. Just come back to Him, for He is always there with open arms. His mercy is new every morning. And His love for you never runs out.
22 Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.
—Lamentations 3:22-23
